Observations: - Well, I Picked up Steve on my way to Oswegatchie for our first real ride there, though I think he's ridden there once before.
Headed up the red trail right behind the ball fields and up the hill.
trails are mostly good with a few hike a bike sections. played around
back in the quarry trying a few different tech spots, which we both
fail at mostly :). rode back the eastern blue trail. to where it hits
the orange. We found out the hard way the orange trail is pretty much
not rideable, unless you're a total nut case. Lots of cool rollers and
a few jumps for people who are into that... fun sorta techy spot.

TA Report: West Hartford Reservoir

Date of Activity: 5-30-2010
Condition of Trail: GREAT
Trail Ambassador Name: Daren Casey
Encounters & Observations: Another great day to ride. The hardest part of today’s ride was to get started after stopping. The temperature was perfect and the breeze was cool.. I only needed a hammock something cold to drink. The trails are really starting to form again. There’s a group of 29er rigid riders that appear to be making some of the trails a little straighter and smoother but ruining anything… just making them faster. I’m trying to make it a point to ride the trails that are starting to become covered. MDC is doing major work along the fence line next to the large concrete container. They have it fenced off coming from the RT 44 side. I looped back today so I could see it and they have large machinery and a lot of dirt. A chain link fence encloses the construction site. Looks like that may be going on for a while.

TM Report: Upper Paugussett State Forest

Date: 5/29/2010
Location: Upper Paugussett State Forest, Upper Gussy Trail.
Work: Met up with Andre Artois and his father Richard, along with Rob Goyda for a little pre-National Trails Day work at Upper Paugussett. There was big oak tree that blew down during one the recent wind storms and was blocking the Gussy Trail. Richard cut off two sections before doing a twenty foot section.

The last section, about twenty feet in length was cut and rolled into place for skinny ride.

Then Rich made perpendicular cuts into the log so that we could chip away with hatchets to make a flat section atop the log for riding down and if you so chose some traction to ride back up. You can huck or roll the low end.

Did a little benching leading up to the ramp. Probably need to come back and do some more benching through here.

TA Report: West Hartford Reservoir

Date of Activity: 5-28-2010
Condition of Trail: Outstanding
Encounters & Observations: Started from the main lot. Stayed on the outer fence line going up. Rode the blue trail along the top. Stopped at the peak for ab out 15 minutes and removed limbs from a fallen tree to reopen the path. Riders now have an alternative to riding the ledge…scary, or walking. Two bikers came by just as I was finishing. One took the path I just cleared and thanked me. That made my day. Only the constant wet spots are left, and always will be. They are mostly on the inner fire road crossing between the inner and outer dikes. MDC is still doing a lot of work along the closer fence line. It’s marked well and now even fenced if you ride in from the 44 side. The markings and fence begin at the large concrete container about 1/3 of the way in on the fence line. If you take right on to the hard top, follow it down to the main walking path and then take your next left..uphill…ugh.. It’s the “road” that leads out to Canal street, you can finish on the fence line. I will explore from the other direction my next time out to see how far in from this side we can go and if there are any other paths. It was getting dark so I couldn’t this time. Good choice on my part as I had 2 flats in the couple of miles.. I hate walking my bike! Got lazy and figured I’d just walk the last ½ mile instead of changing the tire..again! Oh, I got real close to deer. He was more worried about eating that me.

Condition of Trails(s): Awesome -- did some great work this week
Observations: - Pittsfield State Forest is not the pitts at all! What a great place to ride, work on the trails, camp and hang out. This was one killer weekend! 40 folks from all over New England and 2 from Puerto Rico attended. The IMBA trail crew, Chris and Leslie, instructed, along with NEMBA trail bosses. We even had 7 people from CT attend, picture above. The first day I attended the bridge building breakout- 82 ft of boardwalk and bridge completed... unbelievable! The second day we moved rock and more rock and more rock. The riding was mighty fine too! Ruth from Berkshire Chapter led us on a ride through the jungle ( I am not telling you what this means- you'll have to check it out on the MBAS ride on June 6, and a private stock of swoopy fun singletrack. Of course we had to ride over the new bridge a couple of times!

TA report - Oswegatchie Hills

Date of Activity: 5/24/2010
Condition of Trails(s): Good, Loomy, some newer /relocated trails are soft still.
Observations: - Soo, Lately I'm into exploring new trails in the area. something different to ride on.
Well, I've been to Oswa-got-che (errrrr something like that in ancient indian language that I can't spell.) But the last time I was there was a few yrs ago and It wasn't what I would call "bike friendly" well, I heard through the grape vine that some trails had been re-blazed and others have been added and now it was pretty much rideable. So today I decided I'd check it out. well after a minor shoulder injury and having my bottom bracket issue yesterday I thought I'd take it easy and just hike it... well it's a wicked cool place.!!!! I hiked up the new red trail which is so new it's still loomie and soft. Was a great hike and I transverse a good part of the place including the quarry's and walked some of the old carriage roads. The place has some kinda strange scenery, hard to describe but, there was a few spots where I began to wonder if I had popped into a JRR Tolkien book and was walking through the outskirts of the Shire, waiting for a Hobbit to come strolling on down the trail. The pictures really don't do it justice! it's eery and cool at the same time.

How did you use the trail: Mountain Biking, Hiking, and TM
What was the time of day: Various
Hours on trail: 7+ hours TM and 8 hours in the saddle while wearing orange
Distance: 35+ Miles

Encounters and Observations: With only a few days left, May 2010 has so far turned out to be a great month of riding up on the trails of the Burlington/Nassahegan network. The lack of major precipitation events has for the most part kept the trails nice and dry and rolling with mid-summer like conditions. The Trail Gnomes have been out in full force and I see new improvements almost ride. Have met and interacted with a ton of folks out in the woods the last few weeks and for the most part all have been very friendly and respectful of the trails.

On a side note did compile some GPS data from my riding up in this area and believe it or not there’s some 60+ mile of trail to be explored.

Pulled into the Whitney Ave lot around 9am. First task was to trim back the prickler bushes that were slowly closing the entrance to the Bramble Path off the Rail Trail. This is not really a sustainable trail -- it needs trimming too often and is not worth it. It's too bad because parts of it are nice and it offers an alternative way to the North Bridge. (Especially since the heavily-used main connector a little further north is a now just a washed out fall line...)

I continued hiking in and blazed the yellow and red trails north of the orange stream (rusty river) and trimmed back a good amount of overgrowth as well as de-clogged a leaf-dammed stream crossing. There are some truly beautiful, fast-flowing trails up at the north end on the ridge.
PHOTO >> trumbull-red.jpg

It was a gorgeous morning. I returned to the Whitney Ave lot, hopped on the bike and rode for a quick couple of hours revisiting the red and yellow trails I just blazed. Next, drifting down to the blue, I headed south to the lake bed and finally turning back north, I wandered a bit on the lower trails just north of the lake bed on my way back out. Trails were all dry and in great shape.

Before leaving the park I stopped in to say hi to the land owner by the river off below the Whitney Ave lot. I had chatted with him a few months back mentioning that DEP would be in with gravel to fix the rail trail. Since the gravel hadn't arrived yet, I thought I say hello and tell him it was ordered but not yet delivered but the TTC was now in action to spruce up the trails here and there as well. He's a pleasant chap, loves the woods and was happy to chat. Good vibes - another great day in the park!

Location: West Rock State Park
Trail(s) Ridden: R, W, B
How did you use the trail?: Mountain bike riding
What was the time of day?: Late morning
Duration (Hours): 3
Distance (Miles): Yes

Condition of Trail(s): Much erosion, some blow downs, otherwise good. I cleared two significant blow downs a short distance from the parking lot. Trails braids or herd paths were starting to form.

Observations: I haven't been to West Rock for a while and I am unimpressed with all the "trail improvements." There are bridges everywhere, only one covered flowing water, the others were over dry 'streambeds', where I have rarely seen water for long periods of time. There were waterbars everywhere, again the areas were dry. Hikers and mountain bikers appeared to have detoured around several waterbars creating trail braids or herd paths and in so doing widening the trails, opening the doors for more erosion. On the other hand, there were several areas that were muddy and could have benefitted from trail maintenance projects. I always thought that part of going out in the woods for a hike or a mountain bike ride was the varied terrains and the challenge of picking your path. This challenge has been severely limited and has taken some of the thrill and uniqueness out of West Rock.

What was the time of day? morning
Hours: 2 hrs
Distance: 10 miles

Encounters & Observations: Trails were super fast today, not me mind you, just the trails. Encountered a deer and a rabbit, both very close. The orange jersey must be soothing to them. I saw Charlie B. on the trails. He asked me to keep an eye out for some of his equipment because he forgot to zip up his seat pouch. I found his tube and co2 cartridge but not the multi-tool. He said the new TA jersey’s are cool but he prefers the pockets and zippers. At 70 and mtb’ biking, he should get what he wants! Every trail was nice and dry until I got to the bottom. The fire road between the dikes and RT 44 were still pretty wet. That’s normal. I was having a great ride until I was on the seat buster trail were a tree jumped out in the middle of the riding trail. It won. Made for a long last portion of the ride…. Ugh…..

Please pay attention when on the fence line. MDC is doing all kinds of work all up and down there. They have signs posted and move some of them on the weekends but there are so many trails in that area but it’s easy to end up on a trail that you shouldn’t be because they don’t have signs posted at every entrance/exit. Great time for riding at West Hartford MDC!

Cleared some brush and branches off of the less ridden trails coming down from the top of the blue trail to the planks. Now you can keep your speed.

I’m looking for more information about the law suit that was awarded to a woman for 2.9 million dollars. I’ve only seen bits and pieces and still trying to gather more information. Please email any information to daren@darencasey.com.

Observations: Vincent Rinaldi, Glenn Vernes, Ed Perten, Randy, and myself tackled a problem spot. When the trail was first built there was a little wet spot here, and we put a bit of corduroy on it. After a few years, and a wet winter, and lots of use, the wet spot grew, the wood rotted, and someone lined the trail with rocks in an attempt to help the problem, but actually worsened it by keeping the water in the trail.

If you want to do trail work, that's great, but please learn something first, by attending trail school or going on a TM day or reading the IMBA trail solutions book. Get the land manager's permission too! And if you know that some one has built the trail, talk to them before doing stuff that can actually harm the trail.

We pulled out the rotten wood, and the misplaced rocks, and a number of limbs lining the trail. Please do not line the trail with branches! This tends to keep the water in the trail. After removing the old stuff, we dug out the wet organic matter and built a ditch, 18 inches wide and about 10 inches deep to drain the water. The ditch had rounded sides, so that when the water drains and brings leaves and other organic matter with it, the silt won't get stuck in the ditch and block the water again. We made the ditch about 8 feet long. We also cleared organic matter and brushes above the wet area to keep the water running. The water drained mostly, and then we built a fairly narrow rock armor treadway. It is a bit technical, but very smooth to ride over and works well in both directions.

CTNEMBA has many opportunities for riders and other users of the parks to get out and help the trails. My next big day planned for TM will be on National Trails Day on June 5, and I will be cutting new trail at Waldo on the other side of the access road.

Trails are well-used but in good condition, although there are a few areas still on the TM agenda. We saw a lot of riders, from neophytes to seasoned veterans. These trails get a lot of use and are holding up well due to good design.

The trails here are deceptively difficult, with a lot of square-edged rocks and steep, twisty climbs. There are also a lot of logs of various sizes lying across the trails. Bring a rigid and/or singlespeed bike and you're in for a workout.

TA Report: Cockaponset SF / Weber Woods

Trail(s) ridden: Green/yellow/white/red/orange
How did you use the trail?: Mountain bike
What was the time of day?: Late afternoon
Duration (hours): 1.0
Distance (miles): 5

Encounters and Observations: trails in mostly good shape, but large patches of sloppy mud due to Saturday night’s wicked storm; downhill areas of loose, washed out rock covered with leaves presents challenge at speeds; lower part of yellow trail still requires detour which is marked with blue ribbons on branches at head level; detour in this section not top notch, but does the job; I upset a momma duck with young in the stream in this area with my presence; she left me alone without incident except some squawking and wing flapping; a nice short, lung burning ride to start off the work week.

Monday RAW Ride Recap

The second installment of the Monday RAW ride at Huntington SP had a new edition, Rick Brodsky from Newtown. Having gotten out late from work we started riding at 6 PM and it looked like it was threatening to rain. It was a nice temperature, though, and a little buggy. We rode counter clockwise today by hitting most of the single track but excluding a lot of what he rode last week.

Vin (above) now a 2 ride regular and Rick, first time at the Monday RAW.

We stopped so I could tighten my Eccentric Bottom Bracket. On the climb prior to this I threw my chain and on a Singlespeed that is kind of hard. I knew something was up and decided to retighten my EBB.

Trails Ridden: Various
How did you use the trail?: TM, Mountain Biking, Photography
What was the time of day? 9 am - Noon, Plus
Duration (Hours): 3, 1, 1
Observations:
Arrived at DF parking lot and met crew. Although there were only four of us we had the verve and vigor of 14! Alex, a local, joined us and pitched right in.

Our First Project
We built up the rock-armored stream crossing quite nicely as flat rocks were easy to find right nearby. We were joined by another biker: Jose, who graciously chipped in and helped us find rocks and build up the crossing. He was the first to inaugurate it and confirmed it's now a breeze to traverse this stream.

mighty in spirit if not in number... ;-)

Second Project
We moved up to the mud area at the foot of the rocky climb. This spot is perpetually soft and muddy because the runoff from the long rocky descent above has nowhere to go.

We first knicked the edge of the water-logged trail. Dave masterminded the effort to build a rock-lined channel where the water usually gathers. We dug out a channel and lined it with rocks pitching the channel slightly to direct the water off the trail. We finished it off by tapering the edges, making it almost almost invisible to the unobservant passerby.

As we were working, we met a couple of hikers and quite a few bikers who commented how much fun and improved it was riding the rock armored stream crossing we just built.

On our way out, we also met an enthusiastic history buff with a metal detector searching for ancient artifacts. The Pequonnock Valley park has quite a few historical ruins such as the foundations of the Tait Paper Mill nearby where we worked and remnants of an old earthen dam and spillways from an old reservoir a little further north.

On a side note: Our trail work at Mianus Park has sometimes been unkindly received. At that park, people thought the trail changes we made were unsanctioned rogue work done surreptitiously in the middle of the night! To alleviate this potential misunderstanding at Trumbull, our trail work is "signed" - one way to spread the word!

Post TM
Dave and Alex had to split so Rich S and I rode a bit. Rich has been quietly fixing up a lot of the trails in the North Bridge area and has been keenly observant of the flow of water after our recent heavy storms. Up by the North Bridge (a.k.a. Coyote Crossing), he pointed out mammoth run off issues that need to be redirected off the trails a little higher up. The TTC will be tacking this sometime soon as well.

We also observed the larger-built boardwalk needs to be extended because the smaller size doesn't hold up and is broken.

My bike had a scrunched cable and wasn't shifting at all but after returning the tools and getting the cable replaced, I came back to the park that evening and rode for about an hour, starting from Whitney Road. The weather was phenomenal: sunny, just perfect for an early evening ride!

TA Report Upper Gussy Trail

Date of Activity: May 16, 2010
Condition of Trail(s): Good, dry.

Trail Ambassador Name: Paula Burton & Glenn Vernes
Trail Ambassador Email: glennvernes33athotmaildotcom
Town: Newtown
Location: Upper Paugussett State Forest
Trail(s) Ridden: Upper Gussy, fire road
How did you use the trail?: Mountain Bike
What was the time of day?: Late Morning
Duration (Hours): 1.5
Distance (Miles): 8 or 10

Observations: This if a fun trail with good flow and moderate technical challenge. Only problems were a large tree down at about the halfway point, a lot of sticks and twigs down (we picked up what we could), and it appears that horses have post-holed one of the benched sections. We rode it counter-clockwise, taking the fire road to the top of the trail. There's less singletrack climbing in this direction (you climb on the fire road), but it would be doable either way.

Do yourself a favor and avoid the blue trail that leads out of the parking lot, as it's no fun to ride. In fact, the bypass constitutes one of the best parts of the trail.

We were surprised to see two other groups of riders on the trail. Both gave it favorable reviews.

If you don't know the trail you'd be well advised to get a map, as it's unblazed and can be hard to find.

Hours: 2.15 hrs
Distance: 10 plus miles

Encounters & Observations: Just a GREAT day of riding. The trails were outstanding and the friends I was riding with were even better! The trails and weather were absolutely great!! A tree had fallen on the trail headed up to Kings Crest. I wasn’t riding as an TA so I didn’t have the saw with me, (DOH), but we worked as a team and managed to get the limbs pulled back, broke and wedged so the trail is now clear and ready. One member of our group was having a rough day so we stopped for a few minutes to let her recouped, see picture. Though it wasn’t her greatest day of riding, she and her husband had one helluva cookout after the ride. Great riding, weather, food and friends. Does it get any better??

Of course, I still got lost like I always do here and ended up going around in circles before getting my bearings. Encountered some friendly hikers along the way, and lots of unleashed dogs. The trails are in good shape except for two big muddy spots near the pond on the White trail. There are reroutes around both spots, but lots of tire tracks through the mud widening the trail. I also cleared a pile of fallen branches blocking the trail just before the White trail meets the Blue. There are a couple of big blow-downs on the Ives Trail coming down toward the pond and the trail has been rerouted around them.

TA Report: Hop River State Rail Trail

Dates of Activity: April 20, 27, May 7, 2010

Condition of Trail: Good

Trail Ambassador Name: Tom Ebersold

Email: bikehikekayak123@sbcglobal.net

Towns: Manchester, Vernon, Bolton, Andover, Columbia, Coventry, Willimantic

Location: Hop River State Rail Trail

Trail Ridden: Hop River State Rail Trail

How did you use the trail: bicycle
What was the time of day: late afternoon

Hours: 9

Distance: 23 miles

Encounters and Observations: I rode the Hop River trail in three sections as part of my exploration for a future group ride. I started from the trailhead on Colonial Road in Manchester, off I-84 Exit 63. There is room for 15 to 20 cars at this trailhead. The trail in Manchester is hard-packed dirt for its 0.80-mile length. The section in Vernon, including the 4-mile Rockville spur, is hard packed stone dust. The trail in Bolton also has hard packed stone dust, which extends into Andover. At Burnap Brook Road in Andover, the surface becomes hard packed dirt with some loose rocks that are occasionally rough for riding.

The bridge over Rt. 316 in Andover is missing. If you are marking your mileage from Manchester, it is at mile 12.90. In Andover where the trail is parallel to Rt. 6, turn right onto an informal path to Center St. Take a left onto Center St. and stay with the left fork. Turn left on Rt. 316 at the stop sign, then right onto Monument Lane, then right into the driveway of the Museum of Andover History, and left to resume the trail.

At mile 14, there is a metal tunnel under Rt. 6 that could be dark with non-working lights. Watch for broken glass. In Columbia, there is a 1.2-mile section of stone dust (between Parker Bridge Rd. and the Hop River) that is actually rougher to ride than the hard-packed dirt. Just after the trail passes under Rt. 6 in Columbia, there is a 0.1-mile section of trail that has about 1 inch of water on it. The most navigable part of the trail ends at Kings Rd. in Columbia where there is a jersey barrier blocking access to a bridge across the Hop River. I recommend turning around at this point. The abutments for the bridge are pulling apart, the planks are rotting, and the bridge is tilting to one side, so stay off this bridge!

If you want to continue to the end of the trail, turn left onto Kings Rd., then right onto Flanders Rd. (no street sign) at the T-intersection by the horse farm. After you cross the river, turn left to the bypass, and then go straight until you see the rail trail with the Flanders Rd. tunnel on right: there is an ATV road branching left as you come down the short hill from the by-pass (don't take the ATV road). Turn left onto the rail trail and beware of a nasty patch of loose sand (as the by-pass connects to the rail trail). On the trail, there are large chunks of gravel before you encounter a short portion of the trail that still has the original railroad tracks. At mile 20, the trail essentially ends. There is a railroad bridge that crosses the Willimantic River. You could walk across it, being careful not to step on the rotted timbers, but there's no point as the railroad is active on the other side of the bridge.

I also rode the section between Flanders Rd. and the unsafe bridge near Kings Rd. (0.4 miles long). It was uncomfortable to ride with loose rock and brush (some of which got caught in my chain and spokes), and involves crossing a small bridge that has many rotting planks that someone has "reinforced" with a series of branches. There is little to be gained by riding this section of rail trail.

TM Report - George C Waldo SP

Date of activity: May 13, 2010
Condition of Trails: Big blowdown in the second stone wall crossing

Observations: I first noticed this blowdown a few days ago. I did not think it was too bad, except that it was in the trail ( not across it) and the tree had fallen in a stone wall breach. After a closer inspection I realized tIt was a big job. There was a number of smaller trees and limbs that had to be cut before I could get to the trunk. The trunk was lodged between rocks and a smaller tree creating a twist tension which requires lots of cuts. I managed to pinch the saw, but it wasn't too bad to get loose. I also cut smaller tree further up the trail and worked on a tree in the access road.

State of Connecticut officially recognizes The Upper Gussy Trail

Mark Lurie and CT NEMBA started building the Upper Gussy Trail back in 2006 and it was officially approved for construction in 2007. While the trail is about 99% complete (there is a little benching and trail blazing that needs to still be done) it is a contiguous trail that runs from the Brody Road in the forest south to Sanford Road for approximately 2 miles. The new map can be found on the DEP's website for State Parks and Forest Maps.

Monday RAW @ Huntington

There was only one member that showed up to Monday's RAW ride at Hunting this week. Vin Lore, pictured below. We rode for 6+ miles in the Big Burn, the northern single track and a south to north run on the Rock and Roll Trail. On the Rock and Roll Trail there is a very muddy section that needs to be fixed.

In the Big Burn, there is a really big branch down right in the middle of the trail but it makes a good up and over. Probably would be good to lean some rocks against it because it's pretty big. I am sure there will be go around formed in a matter of days.

In the Big Burn we hit a roller right next to the trail that I never knew was there and it's actually adjacent to a nice drop. We also took a run on the Saddle Roller, which is always fun to do. Finally, after the concluding run on Rock and Roll, Vin took a ride down a near by roller.

How did you use the trail?: Mountain Bike
What was the time of day?: Morning & Late Afternoon
Duration (Hours): 2.5
Distance (Miles): 8 or 10

Observations: A quick morning hike at River Highlands revealed the trails to be as dry as ever. The DEP crew I met there last week told me they'd be shoring up the sagging bridges on the yellow trail, but it had not been done as of yet. I saw a lot of bike tracks- I'm apparently not the only one riding here anymore. I also saw the tracks of what appeared to be a small, kid-sized dirt bike on the yellow (Blow Hole) trail, and a chicken line around a large log across that trail (likely made by said dirt bike). I also saw some erosion on the steeper slopes.

In the afternoon I did the Pedal Power group ride at Middlesex. This is one of the few places where mountain bikes are allowed on blue trails, and it's also legal to ride at night. The trails get a lot of use from dirt bikes, ATVs, and whatever else will fit between the trees, and they're pretty beat up as a result. But there's also a new and well built slalom trail that winds down off the power line, and is fun to ride both up and down.

Rick Green's - CT Confidential & possibly more bad news at the Rez!

Rick Green's - CT Confidential

A $2.9 million jury verdict awarded to a woman who crashed her bicycle at the Farmington Avenue reservoir may be more than just bad news for the Metropolitan District Commission.

Thumbnail image for reservoir cycling.jpgThe MDC is now looking at shutting access to its popular reservoir trails to cyclists thanks to Maribeth Blonski of Rocky Hill, who sued after she crashed into a gate in 2002. The controversial verdict came after rulings that the MDC -- a nonprofit municipal corporation -- was not immune to lawsuits, in this case from a cyclist who wasn't paying enough attention as she rode the well-marked trails.

Whatever happened to accepting responsbility for what you do? Nobody forces you to take a bike ride at the reservoir, which includes paved and single-track off road trails. In a region woefully lacking in biking, running and walking trails, the MDC stands out.

reservoir cycling 2.jpgThe result here is that a carless cyclist wins millions of dollars and the rest of us lose. I wonder how happy Ms. Blonksi is with her big victory now.

MDC trails are popular with road and mountain bikers, including me. The miles of trails are one of the few places in the area where walkers, runners and cyclists can go without having to worry about cars.

The issue will likely come up at tonight's MDC meeting of the personel, pension and insurance committee.

The yellow (Laurel Brook) trail has now been re-routed over the new bridge, and the Little Falls trail is now blazed a pastel blue (not CFPA blue trail blue).

There are some new blowdowns that need clearing, and a lot of sticks and branches due to recent high winds.

You can really fly on these smooth, fast, twisty trails once they’re clear of leaves, and you get some miles in your legs.

MDC Ordered To Pay $2.9 Million To Injured Bicyclist

A Superior Court jury in Hartford has awarded a former children's book illustrator $2.9 million for injuries suffered years ago in a bicycle accident on land owned by the Metropolitan District Commission.

The six-person jury awarded the money Friday to Maribeth Blonski of Rocky Hill after finding that the regional water and sewer authority improperly placed a steel gate across a path within the Talcott Mountain Recreation Area, said Blonski's lawyer, Michael A. Stratton.

On May 16, 2002, Blonski, now 43, was biking on a trail in the area, also known as the West Hartford Reservoir, when she struck the gate, breaking four vertebrae in her neck, Stratton said.

The MDC had installed the gate to block motor vehicle access to the water, he said.

R. Bartley Halloran, the MDC's chief in-house lawyer, said Sunday through a spokeswoman that the MDC was surprised by the verdict and intends to appeal.

When the accident happened, Blonski was host of a local-access television program about mountain biking, Stratton said. Blonski now works at the front desk of a health club, he said. She previously worked as an illustrator of children's books.

It took eight years to resolve the case because of a dispute about whether the MDC was immune from responsibility, Stratton said. After a four-day trial before Judge Edward Domnarski, the jury decided the authority was not immune in this instance, and also found that Blonski was partially responsible.

Stratton said Blonski had offered to settle the case for less than the amount awarded by the jury, but MDC refused.

Got to the park after three but it was still sunny, hot and very humid. Entered thru the South End at Daniel Farms Rd. One of the Trumbull Trails Coalition's goals is to revise the exisiting blazing system to simplify perception of main north/south trail system by trying to keep the red highest up, closest to RT25.

Currently the yellow meanders all over the park. On the ridge in the south end, the yellow often frequently overlaps the red. As approved by the Land Manager--in order to minimize confusion--the first step is to separate the red and yellow trails where they frequently overlap. Dual-blazed trails will be phased out throughout the park.

I blazed much or the red trail south of the fire road including up on the cliffs overlooking Rt 25 but there is much more work to be done. Both yellow and red still need to be reblazed on many trails so it may be a bit confusing for a while until the blazing on the overlaps and switches are completed!

Saturday May 8thDidn't get a chance to get to the park until 6pm, but it was still sunny and bright up on the ridge.
Biked in to blaze a bit of the yellow. There is still more work to be done in the south end to minimize confusion/overlap, but as a start, the "Mulholland Drive" trail and other north-south connecting trails were blazed in yellow.

Weather a was gorgeous (and super windy). I only met a couple of hikers and a trail runner whill on the trails.
