Observations/Information: I hiked the circuit around Mianus River Park. The trails were generally clear and mostly dry, except the low spots. I could see many spots that have been armored by the NEMBA gnomes, keeping people out of the squishy mud. There were plenty of people out on a mild Sunday afternoon: dog walkers with most dogs off leash, mountain bikers, and hikers.

Mianus River Park

Trail Conditions: Good
Observations/Information: Paula and I rode Mianus on Sunday. This is becoming a regular destination for us because it's a cool place to ride. I rode the single speed this time and found it to be a great place for that type of bike with its undulating terrain and short steep hills. We rode the newly benched and armored Cabin Trail up to the old chimney and found it to be a dumping ground for candy wrappers. How sad. We spent some time on the older, unmaintained trails on the Greenwich side of the park (Greenwich doesn't allow maintenance). These trails are not as good as those on the Stamford side, but to get in a ride of decent length you have to include them.
The trails along the river were a little moist; those away from it were just about the right tackiness for traction. Here was also less leaf cover than you'd expect. The West River Trail Spur, just off Merribrook Rd, has been blocked off. The River Road was busy with hikers and unleashed, energetic dogs, per usual on Sunday afternoon. We encountered a few other mountain bikers and I loaned one my mini pump. Sadly though, his tube was too far gone to hold air and he had to walk.

Trail Conditions: Very good, clear and dry.
Observations/Information: Paula and I rode Mianus on Sunday the Sixth. We parked at the red barn and were lucky to find a space. The trails near the river were extremely crowded with walkers, dog people, and stroller-pushers- not surprising on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Once away from the river we practically had the trails to ourselves. We found some evidence of damage from the October snow storm but very little- no blocked roads or trails.
Mianus is a cool place. The trails we rode are fun and technically challenging but not overwhelming- intermediate level stuff. No prolonged climbing but a lot of up-and-down. There's supposed to be some pretty radical freeride-type stuff as well, but we didn't sample that. The trails are well cared for with rock armoring, benching, and re-routing of some of the older stuff. It's an example of what a dedicated friends group can do for a park.
The best trail we rode is the New Trail. It was obviously built by mountain bikers because it winds serpent-like through the woods with benched sweepers, armored sections, and rocks alongside to play on. A great trail, and if you haven't tried it you should.
Mianus is clear of storm damage and would be a great place to ride right now.

Observations/Information: Rock pitching project: Had 7 volunteers along with 3 TA's and rock armored a steep fall-line section, used anchor boulders every 6 feet or so for the 30+ foot section. After it was complete 3 mountain bikers were able to test it in both directions.

Condition of Trails: Snow covered and Hard-packed (but too soft for riding)
Observations:
I was cooped up, busy behind a desk for over a month and had to get out so I finally buttoned up and headed over to Mianus late afternoon Sat. for a quick hike. I was curious how the trails looked after so much snow. Sadly, the sun disappeared by the time I got there but the park was still beautiful with heaps of snow blanketing everything.
It's a popular park and all the trails were hard-packed. I met a few dog-walkers, snowshoers and a XC skiers on my hike but no bikers and not the tell-tale sign of bike tread on any of the packed trails. (Even through its hard-packed, it's pretty hard to get much traction on snow this thick and the bike's weight might mess it up for XC skiers.)
Mianus River
Although the snow was really deep, every trail was was packed down. By the time I left, darkness was creeping in and the white ground became gray and featureless in the fading light.
I snapped a few photos but, as mentioned, too bad it was overcast.

Observations: The trail maintenance Saturday was all about vandalism. Recently the park has been hit with an enormous amount of vandalism, many of the trail signs which are affixed to buried 4x4 posts were uprooted, destroyed and mostly taken or toss far away in the woods. This TM session started long before 9AM, as Ryan and Rob, prepped the sign posts by cementing them in large buckets (3-5 gallons) and Rob rotozip the trail names in wood. We all met at the bridge by the Red Barn and Bob had all 6 signs and cemented posts in his truck, so we added tools and he drove his truck in and the rest of us enjoyed a nice stroll in. Along the way a lot of branches were cleared of the road from the recent storms. We did the inner trail / Main road intersection first, which went very quickly due to the easy digging. The next stop was Peak and Swamp sign, we could not get the truck very close so we used my rock crib to load the next 2 cemented sign posts. Four of us hauled the crib up to Peak trail taking many of stop to rest, since we were hauling 200-300lbs. Up at peak trail / look intersection we quickly dug for the post and secured the signs. A decision was made to close the trail braid at the look out used by an old mountain biking trail that was closed a few years ago. Since the best way to block any trail is with a choke stone the hunt began for the perfect stone. We found a 500+ pounder about 100 feet away and used the rock crib to bring it over, slowly and I mean slowly, it took 30+ minutes to haul but now in place there is no moving it. We finished up by install the next 2 sign posts. These post now buried with the 50 - 100lbs of cement are not going anywhere!

Observations: Trail widening needs to be rehabilitated, install a hardened river access, and choke/rehab river side habitat
Trail Maintenance: 44 x 3 hours
Work accomplished: Rehabilitated, armored, choked, and narrowed the Meander Trail over roughly 500 yards. Installed deer fencing and river bank restoration area. Good mix of volunteers from Trout Unlimited, Greenwich Associates, CT NEMBA, Meet up, and the Friends of Mianus RP. Great day of work with some great refreshments and food afterwards, sorry for the delay in writing up!

National Trails Day: Mianus River Park
Mianus River Park National Trails Day Event (Stamford @ 9am June 5th, 2010):
Join CT NEMBA and the Friends of Mianus River Park June 5th for National Trails Day. We'll be giving back to the trails in the morning doing trail maintenance, which will be followed by Lunch and then enjoying the trails on a group ride. The day begins at 9am, meeting on the Stamford side of the Park (here) near the Stone Bridge below the Red Barn. We'll work on a number of projects on the Stamford side with the leadership of CT NEMBA trained trail bosses until around 12/12:30 and then grab Pizza back at the Red Barn. The group ride after lunch that will cover ~7-8 miles of intermediate riding, if we have numbers we can break into advanced and beg/intermediate groups.
Bring gloves, sturdy shoes, a hat, bug spray, and water for the Trail Maintenance. For the ride bring water, helmet, and regular riding gear.

STAMFORD -- In the northern reaches of Mianus River Park, not far from a glistening river, a cluster of T-shirt-clad outdoor lovers stood in a small clearing with their backs bent and legs muddied ...
As part of a joint effort with the Connecticut Chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association, Sofman and several others underwent training in trail maintenance techniques.
On Saturday, Ryan Tucker, the trail maintenance coordinator, instructed the team on how to make a "bench cut," a trail-building method involving cutting in a sloped hill that dates back to the 1920s.
"Most of this stuff is tried and true," he said.
Nearby, another team was busy "armoring" a section of the trail. It involves placing rocks to harden areas where water tends to collect.
"It's like a jigsaw puzzle," said Dave Francefort, another volunteer.
Another group member, Rich Coffey, added, "The tighter they fit, the more the two rocks will match each other and the longer they will stay solid."
As proof of the quality and value of their handiwork, Coffey pointed to the recent torrential downpours.
"The storm did a lot of damage," Coffey said. "But in every place where we built trails, they are still really solid."
Last year, Coffey's 16-year-old son, Gregory, also got involved in the effort.
Along with Francefort, the three are avid mountain bikers, one of the primary users of the park.
At the mention of the sport, Coffey gave a sly smile.
"There's an ulterior motive," he said. "We get to ride what we fixed."

Encounters & Observations: We met with the Stamford Land Conservation Trust, the land owners of the Cabin Trail parcel, to discuss re-routing two serious fall line trails. We walked the Cabin Trail and identified the issues related to and caused by the two fall lines, and the new routes, as well as the rationale for the re-routes, with the SLCT President and Parcel steward.
Re-route is tentatively planned for April 3rds regular Friends of Mianus River Park Trail Maintenance session that meets at 9am the first Saturday of every month at the Stone Bridge on Marriebrook Ln in Stamford.

Encounters & Observations: We met with the Stamford Land Conservation Trust, the land owners of the Cabin Trail parcel, to discuss re-routing two serious fall line trails. We walked the Cabin Trail and identified the issues related to and caused by the two fall lines, and the new routes, as well as the rationale for the re-routes, with the SLCT President and Parcel steward.
Re-route is tentatively planned for April 3rds regular Friends of Mianus River Park Trail Maintenance session that meets at 9am the first Saturday of every month at the Stone Bridge on Marriebrook Ln in Stamford.
