The Happening at Huntington

The 2010 Happening at Hungtington was a huge success this year, in part due to the weather and the outstanding members who volunteered their time and effort to help put this event on. There were over 70 registered riders, with people coming as far from the west as Beacon, NY, and the east just outside of Boston, MA!

Dr Mike's Mobile Bike shop was on hand and very busy throughout the day. Dave and Kathy Herde brough a selection of teeter-totters, ramps, and wooden drops to play on while waiting for one of the led rides to commence.

There were two courses marked for those that wanted to go it alone but there were so many ride leaders for all different skill levels to choose from that there was no doubt you were going to get a great ride today!

Afterwards, Six Foot Subway sandwiches and cold soda were a welcome relief for the day that was turning hotter. The Schwag table was overflowing with goodies. Ironically, yesterday I ran into someone from GT who was supposed to have a demo van at the Happening, along with Cannondale, but there was a miscommunication and all the demo bikes were actually out west. Still, GT came through with a generous donation of t-shirts, hoodies, chainstay protectors, and tires. Even if you ticket wasn't called, you still had to have walked away with something.

I would like to thank Paula Burton for organizing the rides, Vince Rinaldi & Javier Hernandez for helping me marking the courses on Saturday, Heather LaPalme for the artwork done on the advertising poster, Ed Perten for managing the parking situation, and all the ride leaders. Additional thanks to the guy from GT who brought all the schwag, the State of Connecticut's Department of Environmental Protection for allowing us to use Huntington State Park for this venue, and Dr Mike's Mobile Bike Shop for helping people fix issues with their bikes throughout the day.

Here's a little video compilation I made with the remnants of the group of riders that led, you could call it the late comers ride. Or maybe, they are dropping like flies ride. Above, is a group picture of everyone at the high point/lookout on the Chimney Trail. Below is some video of who was left of the ride having fun in the Big Burn.

The next Mountain Bike Adventure Series Ride is August 8th at Cockaponset State Forest. I can't wait for that ride. Bryan, our Trail Ambassador and Regional Trails Rep for the Cockaponsent has three rides planned based on skill levels: Novice/Beginner 4 miles; Intermediate 8 miles; Advanced/Expert/Epic 14 miles.

Anne Shepard, New England Mountain Bike Association's Treasure and a crew from Massachusetts made the event! You've seen 69ers, you might have even seen an old Cannondale SM-600 with a 24" rear and 26" front wheels, well given here top tube requirements, her bike is set up the same way. I guess you could call this bike 46er, or make it easy and call it a 40.

I started a little after 9 AM, coming in from the Whitney Ave north entrance to the park. It was a gorgeous sunny day.The new trail built just south of the Rusty River (Orange Stream) is a great trail but it drops rapidly to the stream at the end in a fall line. It is unfortunately already seeing wear and tear and erosion from both bikers skidding on their descent and rain's inevitable coursing towards the path of least resistance. To counter this, as a first step, I built a short S curve alt route off the steepest part. It's a bit raw still and needs more benching and less organic surface but it should wear in well with usage, Although only a short stretch, in the interim it will function well as an alternate route for an easier climb. With a bit more work at a later date (berming the curve, benching more, etc.) it could be a fun fast swervy descent, and help move traffic away from the now-starting-to-erode fall line section.

Further trails and DEP-approved reroutes are in the works for this area, I thought it wise to gradually upgrade "the flow" - it will tie in better with what's to come...Took a couple of pics of the Rusty River crossing (for the forthcoming area project). Finally--while leaving--I ran into a couple of bikers who expressed a great interest in helping out with trail maintenance and have signed up on the TTC site.

TA Report: Happening at Huntington Pre-Ride

Date of Activity: 6/26/2010
Condition of Trails(s): Good, some soft spots here and there.

Observations: Went out and marked the beginner trail first thing in the morning. Turns out I missed a turn and new I had to go back and fix that but I only had an hour before other people showed up to help with the marking the other routes.

Back at the lot, only Javier and Vince showed up so seeing that we didn't have all day to mark trails, we decided they would do the intermediate route and we would rely on the ride leaders for the longer rides. Struck up a conversation with two guys decked out in full GT regalia both riding some bling/bling carbon fiber, full susser rigs and told them about how Cycling Sports Group was supposed to bring demos tomorrow but someone on their end dropped the ball and they are not comming. Well, these guys said they would swing buy and drop off some swag.

Javier and Vince took off and started marking the intermediate trail with pink signs and I went back to fix the trail I set earlier this morning. I caught back up with them at the intersection of the red and blue trails where they were talking to this guy named Chris. I offered to show Chris around and promised him some singletrack that he probably hasn't ever ridden before.

Condition of Trails(s): Good, great, very dry, over grown-ish
Observations:Friend came over from Long Island (AKA the "Sand Bar") with his wife for her (??)th birthday. Got her a long morning spa treatment and he escaped to come ride for a few hours. Parked at Haley Farm and rode over to Bluff where Steve, who was running late, met us. The Bluff and Haley Farm were great. LOTS of family type groups riding around today!
Did a quick run on the left side little ridge by the train tracks and then headed up the main ridge spline of the park and cruised out to the bluff. DId a few of the more harsh rock garden type stuff along the edge of Mumford Cove. stopped at one of the many little secluded beaches and when I got off the bike my seat snapped. :( oh well, sorta half fixed it by putting the broken area in the middle on the seat clamp to get out on it. Had a good day though and was pretty whipped with the humidity so it didn't hurt or ride much. Cheapie seat that's very old (and stinky too, blaacc) so I'm not crying about it.

Trail Ambassador Name: Don Hazuka

Encounters and Observations: I had run some ideas about creating a couple of new connecting trails by the DEP Land Manager, so I decided to explore that terrain with compass in hand; had a nice ride in scorching weather; mosquitoes and deer flies were brutal; passed through some low lying spots that just don’t seem to want to dry out; made my way to the kiosk at the eastern parking lot on Route 145 for my weekly replenishment of the map box (and shamelessly with some NEMBA applications); then on to bushwhacking a connecting route between two “grey” dead-end trails off the red trail; it appears that someone already had the same idea and marked a rough route with blue ribbons; I’ve got to do a lot more walking of these potential trails and gather much more info before I attempt to submit a trail request application; most of the trails in this parcel are a result of old logging roads, so my goal is to create some well thought out man made ones to add to what’s in place; a great ending to a mid week workday.

Date of Activity: June 18

Condition of Trail: Varied
Trail Ambassador Name: Tom Ebersold

Encounters and Observations: This was my first visit to Gay City on bicycle and I came away quite impressed. There is truly something for everyone, ranging from wide flat trails that are easy to cruise to washed out trails that are highly technical due to the resulting boulder fields. The trails were generally dry, although there were a few muddy ruts. I was the only biker at the park, although there were a few walkers, one of whom complimented me on my bell that I rang to give notice that I was coming.

Condition of Trails(s): Worked on trails
Observations: I clipped back brush on the blue trail going down to South Pond- it is very dense! Removed deadwood etc. It is still blocked on the bottom. That trail is problematic, but seems to have stablized itself somewhat except at the bottom where it continues to get wider, but I am hoping to work some more on the armoring this week before the MBAS ride on Sunday. Then I went back to the parking lot, and talked to the folks doing the Monday night NEMBA ride. Dave W and Dave H, were working on the Twister Trail, so I found them and they had made excellent progress clearing deadwood and blowdowns in the trail. A spring wind storm had brought down a huge tree in the trail. The NEMBA ride came by and checked out the work that the two Daves had accomplished.

Observations: Trails were almost perfect. I will say the trails almost seemed TOO dry. kinda powdery soil texture. All the normal wet spot were bone dry. Even the areas where springs seep out were dry.
Planned on just doing a quick loop just to play with my shock, ( just came back from service) and with the heat/humidity and all, but there was a sweet breeze by the water so I rode pretty much everything there :) Also ran in the the gentleman that helped me out a yr ago after a major face plant. had a little chat and he thought I was mildly crazy to be riding after that :)

Date of Activity: 6-20-2010
Condition of Trail: Excellent
Trail Ambassador Name: Daren Casey

Encounters & Observations: Started from the main lot and alone. Met a group of 3 other riders on the way up the otter fence line. One of them came down from MA just to ride the Rez and with Charlie! I think Charlie is more famous than the rez….. Well, he missed Charlie, met a couple of other guys and then caught up with me…. No big challenge there. Stopped to fix the 2nd flat and met up with a 5th rider. Had a GREAT ride today on outstanding trails with some new friends. I was too tired to dig the camera out for pictures.

The trails were in excellent condition. Even the bottom of the Bomber trail was dry! A small tree had fallen as you are starting out on the power lines but going left to the outer fence, It’s easily ride able so I didn’t do anything with it. I don’t think I’ve seen the trails more ride able. We just won’t talk about the humidity today. Happy Fathers day.

TA Report: Troutbrook Valley Trail Advocacy Day

Date of Activity: 6/19/10
Condition of Trails(s): Dry

Observations: Saturday at Trout Brook was trail advocacy day which included both CTNEMBA Trail Ambassadors and Aspetuck Land Trust Trail Stewarts meeting and greeting those coming to the park at 3 of the 5 entrances (Jump Hill, Elm Street and Bradley Road) and CTNEMBA was handing out to mountain bikers a park rules info sheet.

David Francefort, Rich Coffee and Trail Stewart Lisa Brodley were at the Bradley road entrance trail head with the CTNEMBA tent. Mark Lurie and trail stewart Dick Stewart were at the Jump Hill entrance and Paula Burton, Ed Perten and stewarts Curt Nasar and Jean Marie Wiesen were at the Elm Street entrance.

Lisa Brodlie(l) with Dave Francefort (middle) and Rich Coffey (right)

Ed Perten (left) and stewarts Curt Nasar (middle) and Jean Marie Wiesen (right)

Mountain Biker turn out was low for such a nice day, but for those who came we had a chance on a one on one basis discuss the park issues facing mountain biking and received some really interesting feedback from the bikers' standpoint. The Aspetuck Land Trust trail stewarts were busy making sure that all dogs walkers had their dogs were leashed in the designated areas.

The chance to have CTNEMBA and Aspetuck Land Trust trail stewarts work together on this venture proved to provide a greater understanding of issues they deal with on a daily basis and also for them a better understanding of what CTNEMBA can provide for them and to the park to enhance the experience for all trail users. The first trail maintenance project for CTNEMBA was agreed upon and needs to be now coordinated with the ALT.

There was no mountain biker activity at Jump Hill. There were however, many road bikers riding by that morning, so many that you might have thought that there was some sort of race going on. Riding around the Saugatuck Reservoir seems to be a popular activity for Saturday morning. Mark Lurie took a bunch of pictures and posted them on his blog of these weekend road warriors.

The Res is still open! We rode the blue trail, taking all the side trails into and out of the woods, took a right at Reflector Man onto a nice, swoopy, smooth (by Res Standards) singletrack that dumped us out on the powerline. Our plan was to take the fence line back, but it was closed at the old water tank, forcing us to ride back to the parking lot on the paved road (in the wrong direction).
After the ride we went out to eat, where Paula had a bowl of soup, and I had a man-sized calzone.

Work accomplished: the southwest entrance road (off Tower Hill) to the SF was heavily overgrown with branches scraping against any vehicle entering; horse riders had a very hard time passing because above head growth was in their faces; it was dangerous bike riding because you could not see what was coming around the bends and were shredded by the overhangs; removed all lower growth on foot with loppers and higher growth on ladder (did solo- not smart) with loppers; dragged all brush deep into woods out of sight; road used to be almost entirely shaded, now almost in complete sun.
