TA Report: Millers Pond State Park

Date of Activity: 4/25-4/26/09
Trail Ambassador Name: Glenn Vernes
Trail Ambassador Email: glennvernes33atcotmaildotcom
Town: Durham
Location: Millers Pond  State Park
Trail(s) Ridden: Red, red/white
How did you use the trail?: Mountain Bike
What was the time of day?: Afternoon
Duration (Hours): 5
Distance (Miles): Unknown
Condition of Trail(s): Good, well used

Events: Gave directions to one hiker, helped one biker with a chain repair.

Observations: This is a very popular area for mountain biking with a lot of freeride type drops, jumps, and stunts.  The stunts are all legal and well constructed (although the run ups could be smoother). The stunts are mostly intermediate to advanced level (due mostly to the lack of good run ups) but there are chicken lines around almost all of them.

The red trail, just completed last fall, has two distinct sections, that in the northern section of the park, which leaves directly from the parking lot, and that in the southern part, which is accessed off of the dirt road just inside the gate. The northern section is the more cross country oriented, with fast, flowing  turns and prolonged climbing in either direction. Although clearly a cross country oriented trail, there are still ample opportunities to drop, jump, and huck. It will take the average rider about an hour to complete this section, and there are few bailout options.

The southern section and the red/white (a shortcut back to the pond) are pure freeride, with twisting, rocky climbs, log ramps, drops, and hucks in rapid succession. It will take the average rider about 1.5 hours to complete this section (red to red/white), and it should not be attempted alone.

April 19 Trail Ambassador Training

Eric Mayhew presented his CT NEMBA Trail Ambassador pitch and training slides to a packed house at the Veterans Memorial Pavalion at Brooksvale Park Sunday Morning. There were NEMBA members from all points of the state, and some even from out of state looking to get their own Trail Ambassador Program off the ground.

Learning to become a Trail Ambassador is about common sense and your role and responsibility while riding. It's also about local knowledge and being an expert on the trails that you know and ride frequently. The training was more like an open discussion and flowed smoothly, however, while the forecast initially called for showers, Sunday morning was turning out to be a glorious spring day and everybody was itching to ride.

from Left to Right: Vic, Mark, Tom, & Eric

Trail Ambassador Training Ride:

The Ride of Mechanicals

The ride started off with a fun climb up the Red Trail through Brooksvale Park and then picked up a little offshoot trail that finally took us to the back entrance of Naugatuck State Forest. This trail was really fun, tight twisty single track that gave way to technical dual track. There were a few minor mechanicals along the way: Nathan was having seat post problems and Steve's derailler got realligned with a stick.

from Left to Right: Nathan, Steve, Eric, & Patrick

Prior to hitting the State Forest, we had our first big mechanical problem when Tom's tubeless rear tire sprung popped the bead and was dead! What is the advantage of running tubeless again?

I gave Tom my spare 29er tube to save him from the walk of shame back to the parking lot. Again, what is the advantage of riding tubeless?

Following closely on Tom's heels, one of the guys that came all the way from Massachussetts must have hit a stick that pushed his rear derailler into the spokes and got jammed up. The crew applied their newly awoken Trail Ambassador knowledge and got Chris rocking again, and saved him from the dreaded walk of shame.

Tom finishes up his repair.

Eric extols the finer points of Trail Ambassadoring on trail edicate and trail useage, including the Rules of the Trail (Courtesy of the International Mountain Biking Association):

These guidelines for trail behavior are recognized around the world. IMBA developed the "Rules of the Trail" to promote responsible and courteous conduct on shared-use trails. Keep in mind that conventions for yielding and passing may vary, depending on traffic conditions and the intended use of the trail.

1. Ride On Open Trails Only: Respect trail and road closures -- ask a land manager for clarification if you are uncertain about the status of a trail. Do not trespass on private land. Obtain permits or other authorization as may be required. Be aware that bicycles are not permitted in areas protected as state or federal Wilderness.

2. Leave No Trace: Be sensitive to the dirt beneath you. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage than dry ones. When the trail is soft, consider other riding options. This also means staying on existing trails and not creating new ones. Don't cut switchbacks. Be sure to pack out at least as much as you pack in.

3. Control Your Bicycle: Inattention for even a moment could put yourself and others at risk. Obey all bicycle speed regulations and recommendations, and ride within your limits.

4. Yield to Others: Do your utmost to let your fellow trail users know you're coming -- a friendly greeting or bell ring are good methods. Try to anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to all other trail users, unless the trail is clearly signed for bike-only travel. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill, unless the trail is clearly signed for one-way or downhill-only traffic. Strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one.

5. Never Scare Animals: Animals are easily startled by an unannounced approach, a sudden movement or a loud noise. Give animals enough room and time to adjust to you. When passing horses, use special care and follow directions from the horseback riders (ask if uncertain). Running cattle and disturbing wildlife are serious offenses.

6. Plan Ahead: Know your equipment, your ability and the area in which you are riding -- and prepare accordingly. Strive to be self-sufficient: keep your equipment in good repair and carry necessary supplies for changes in weather or other conditions. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.

But it didn't stop there. Chris' derailler finally bit the dust. Patrick was able to get the derailler off, break the chain, and convert the bike to a single speed so that Chris could continue riding.

Shortly after this, I discovered a problem of my own. My rear tire was loosing pressure, inidicative of a small leak, and I just gave out my only spare 29er tube. Of course I could have thrown on a 26er tube, I keep 2 extras in my Camel, but we were running late and with the setup I have on my 29er rear wheel with the tug nuts it was easier stopping every so often and putting air in the tire.

Below is a shot of Nathan on the gas line that runs through Naugatuck SF and as you can see it's a straight shot for miles and miles. This was the high point of the ride because it was all downhill from here, and what a thrilling downhill ride it was.

What was the time of day?: Afternoon
Duration (Hours): 1.5
Distance (Miles): 7.5

Condition of Trail(s): Good. Leafy and dry.

Observations: This is a new state park and is a popular place for hikers and dog walkers. It also gets a lot of ATV use, although it is posted off limits. I saw two ATVs on my visit and saw both ATV and dirt bike tracks. They were so bold as to ride right through the main parking lot full of people.

There is some good, twisty, relatively smooth singletrack here, a little too tight for a 29er, with few roots and even fewer rocks. There is also a lot of double track which has been bermed by the ATVs. ATVs seem to be staying off the singletrack. There are some new and well-built bridges over wet areas. The trails lead to several high bluffs overlooking the CT river

I also found some old, poorly built stunts, rotting and dangerous, which I dismantled.

This is a good place for a quick ride of 1-2 hours, preferably on a single speed and/or rigid bike, or to introduce new riders to the sport.

New England Trail and Advocacy School in CT

What was the time of day? Morning and Afternoon
Hours riding: Morning Hiking/Building 9-12 Afternoon
Riding 1:30 - 2:00
Condition of Trails(s): Dry and Fast
Encounters & Observations:
As detailed by David Francefort's 4-18 report: Our crew added a berm, brought up a couple of large trees and armored a rock face to make it rideable. I spent the majority of the time working on the berm – with occasional moments to assist in lugging the big log up the hill. TM totalled 3 hours. After lunch nearby--came back for a short ride. Encountered many dog walkers (it was a beautiful day)

On April 4th - 3 hours of TM with the Friends of Mianus River Park rebuilding a trail near the front gate at Merribrook. Created a 4-5 tier stepped trail down the hill with logs (anchored with rebar) and filled/flattened trail areas with woodchips, dirt and rocks.

Observations: The morning start by lugging in equipment for continued work on our trail re-route, alot of great stuff was done today and the re-route will be complete in one more session and trail will will be back open.

Today we added a berm, brought up a couple of large trees and armored a rock face to make it rideable. TM was 3 hours today, hit some lunch and came back for some riding, while waiting around a family that was fishing got into a spat with a dog walker, who's dog was not leashed, jumped in the river and got tangled in the fishermans line. The lady fisherman ended up calling the police and 1/2 hour later as we started our ride the local dog warden pulled up, we passed the warden issuing a ticket to a dog walker who's dog was not leashed. Stamford ordinance requires all dogs to be leashed. So the warden was handing out $100 fines, second offense is $500... OUCH!

TA Report: Nassahegon State Forest

Date of Activity: 4/12 - 4/18 Trail Ambassador Name: Mark L
Town: Burlington
Location: Nassahegon State Forest
Trail(s) Ridden: Stone Road, Sessions Woods, Scoville Road
How did you use the trail? Hiking & Mountain Biking
What was the time of day? Mornings & afternoons
Hours: 8 TA, 1 TM

Condition of Trails: Dry and firm. Several newer trails are soft due to low traffic volumes. Many trail improvements to wet areas this past week.

Encounters & Observations: Substantial increase in rider traffic this week as the weather warmed and schools began their vacations. Large groups - as many as 60 riders - attacked the trails which is both good and not so good. Good, because the traffic packs and firms the trails and gets a lot of people out into the woods. Not so good because not everyone likes the tight, twisty nature of the Nassahegon trails and so cut-throughs and bypass trails are on the increase. A few trails are becoming homogenized because of this.

Bear sightings Tuesday near the Route 69 trails. A mother and two cubs. Riders are being warned to keep their distance if this family is encountered.

Got to meet the Nassahegon Nassties (see picture above), a great bunch of local BMX and trail riders who were enjoying vacation week and the local dirt track. They were improving a couple of the existing jumps along with a man who had parked his truck in the woods near the dirt track. A Town truck came along and dumped a full load of dirt on the access road completely blocking his departure, much to the Nassties' delight, who readily volunteered to dig him out for a nominal fee. He agreed, got freed, and they got $20 for their efforts. Lunch for everyone!

Motorbikes continue to infiltrate the woods but are still limited in numbers. Trail damage remains minimal.

It appears that some riders are riding around puddles, muddy spots, thereby widening trails, potential for erosion problems. Who would have thought that mountain bikes can travel through mud and water, what a concept!

MRP: Extra trailwork session this Saturday (4/18)!

Hi to you mountain bikers and others who have attended our trailwork sessions, Ryan Tucker is coordinating an extra trailwork session this Saturday in the MRP. If you have any questions, please contact him at: rrtucker@gmail.com.

What we have left:

-finish the berm (we'll have to bring in dirt from a suitable place, I have scoped an area at the top of the trail where it shouldn't cause any damage)

-create a "fill bench" across the rock face. This is a biggie. It will involve cutting, stabilizing, and anchoring two decent sized logs to essentially create a restraining wall and then filling it with rock
and soil. Aside from building a bridge with treated lumber or using pneumatic tools to cut into the rock face this is the best option for accessibility by all trail users to effectively navigate the rock face. At the end of the day it should be a foot or so wide an providea stable and sustainable solution.

-finish the lower half of the trail down to the main road. Biggest task here will be building the log up and overs and benching the trail.

Some thoughts we brainstormed were keeping the tread as narrow as possible near the main road so as to keep traffic on the trail limited to downhill hikers and bikers until we have all erosion and building kinks worked out. It will naturally be a very difficult up trail so that should help, and the log obstacles on the way down should keep riders from barreling down into the main road at dangerous speeds (as well as the trail junction having good visibility).

All thought comments, and extra hands are appreciated.

If you're interested in attending, meet at the bridge on Merriebrook Lane at 9am, Saturday April 18th.

Condition of Trail(s):
This area has become very popular for mountain biking in the last few years, and the trails show signs of relatively frequent use. There were some wet spots, especially on the southern part of the property. We cut the ride short to avoid rutting up the lowest part of the southern loop.

Observations: There were a dozen or so cars in the lot, most of them fellow mountain bikers. This is also a popular spot for horse riding and dog walking, but there were no horses out this evening. There is a great network of trails in this area, but finding many of them requires some local knowledge, careful map reading, or a guide.

Town: Redding/Bethel
Location: Collis P Huntington SP
Trail(s) Ridden: Blue, White, Green, part of the lollipop and the Big Burn.

What was the time of day? Late afternoon, Ride After Work
Hours: 1
Condition of Trails: Dry and firm in most places but muddy in others

Encounters & Observations: Blue Trail off the Carriage road has quite a few muddy sections. I know most of these dry out in the summer but some areas could be improved with some more armoring.

Met this woman pushing a jogging stroller on the single track that starts at the Glacial Erratic.

There is a tree leaning over on the Green Trail as it starts climbing up Little Vomit. Probably need some chain sawing on that one.

Trails in VG overall shape, just a little mud and a few deadfalls. Nice swoopy network with some added rock features and obligatory abandoned car (we decided it was a Ford Fairmont). One woods road accessable to vehicles was apparently used as a dumping ground for old office equipment

Observations: We cleared some deadfall, nothing requiring cutting. Helped Charlie repair 2 front flats. Glenn seemed to enjoy his new rigid singlespeed 29er.

TA Report: Nassahegon State Forest

Date of Activity: 4/5 - 4/11 Trail Ambassador Name: Mark L
Town: Burlington
Location: Nassahegon State Forest
Trail(s) Ridden: Stone Road, Sessions Woods
How did you use the trail? Hiking & Mountain Biking
What was the time of day? Mornings; occasional afternoon
Hours: 1.5 TA, 3.5 TM
Condition of Trails: Dry and firm except in usual muddy areas

Encounters & Observations: The trails along Route 69 north and south of the Scoville Road parking area are seeing a lot of pressure. The trails are riding very well despite this. Encountered several riders who were new to the Nassy and helped orient them to the network. They asked if trail maps were available - not yet, but soon!
Unfortunately, there has been a resurgance of dirt bikes on the trails, especially on the weekends. The damage so far has been minimal. Will monitor their activity.
Several local riders organized a "Be Good on Good Friday" clean up of the parking areas. A tip of the hat to them! I have also observed several citizens (non-riders) picking up trash along the sides of roads that run through the woods here. Nice to see.
