Naugatuck State Forest

Date: 1/4/12
Report Type: TA Report:
Trail Name: Naugatuck State Forest
Town: Hamden
Trail Conditions: F R O Z E N ! ! !
Observations/Information: Went out onto the rail trail and into the Naugatuck State Forest...however cut the ride short as our fingers would not get warm. With temperatures in the 20's, with five, yes 5 layers up top, long johns and tights, 2 pairs of socks and neoprene booties, a scull cap and a balaclava, everything else was warm, but not the double layers covering the fingers. The ground was frozen solid and crunchy at times, the shallow puddles were frozen solid, the deeper puddles had a crust over them which broke under the weight of the bike, and the stream was flowing swiftly with icy sculptures along the banks and on anything sticking out of the water. It is extremely hard to unbuckle Camelbak straps across your chest and waist when your fingers are numb from the cold. However, car heaters are a wonderful thing!!! Hoisting a metal bike onto the roofrack with numb hands also proved to be a challenge, however, I stepped up to the plate. It was definately cold today, with a warming spell of 50's reported for later in the week. We just couldn't wait...
We encountered two other die hard road riders, dog walkers and a lone hiker on the paved rail trail.
