River Highlands State Park

Date: March 19, 2012
Report Type: TA Report:
Trail Name: River Highlands State Park
Town: Cromwell
Trail Conditions: Very good, and dry
Observations/Information: I rode River Highlands on Monday. The trails were as dry as I've ever seen them- just a little mushy at the top of the yellow trail. It will be interesting to see if the Blow Hole floods this year. There has ben a lot of recent TM activity at the park. Trails have been cleared of blockages from the October snowstorm and rerouted where necessary. Only the yellow trail is still not totally passable with three trees accross. The yellow trail has also suffered some erosion from recent severe weather events. The stream swells after heavy rains and easily carries away the loose soil the trail was built on. Some of the crib walls are deteriorating and the trail is gradually being washed away in one area (see photo). The green trail has also been rerouted around the swampy area, so you no longer need to ride through that.

So overall the trails at River Highlands are in very good shape and the place is well worth riding again. In fact I noticed a lot of bike tracks in the dirt- more than I've ever seen before (including some new chicken lines unfortunately). The park appears to be seeing regular action.
