Trout Brook

Date: Jan. 29, 2012
Report Type: TA Report:
Trail Name: Trout Brook
Town: Weston-Easton
Trail Conditions: Clear of blowdowns; some mud
Observations/Information: My favorite part of Trout Brook is the Red and Purple Trails near the Saugatuck Reservoir, but I won't go there in icy conditions because the rock slabs make it hazardous, even with Microspikes. Today, the rocks were dry and safe to hike. Trout Brook has a mud problem, and we saw evidence of that in spots, along with many areas where armoring has been done. Thankfully, there were no blowdowns to deal with; the trails are completely clear. There were lots of people with dogs (all of them on a lease, per the land trust's new regulations). We saw no bikers, which is good because the area is closed to bikes from Jan. to April, but we did see some bike tracks in the mud. I was able to check out the reroute on the Blue Trail by the Green Trail where a NEMBA crew changed an eroded fall line trail into a switchback. Excellent work and thanks to the volunteers. Since you can't bike in Trout Brook this time of year, it's a good excuse to get out and hike the trails that are closed to bikes anyway.
