Naugatuck State Forest

Date: 1/19/14
Report Type: TA Report:
Trail Name: Naugatuck State Forest
Town: Oxford/Beacon Falls
Trail Conditions: Mixed
Observations/Information: I took my usual double-loop ride early Sunday morning, to see how the trails were. Answer: fine in some places, not so good in others. There were a few spongy spots, including the better part of the trail east of Res 1 (where it was obvious someone had been riding in it), and the badly washed-out part of the trail north of Res 2 was an active watercourse. Had to carry over these. Frozen bootprints on some trails made for an interesting texture. Hopefully the stretch of cold we're about to have will improve things a bit. Ample evidence (ruts, whipped-up leaves) of motorized use.

Minor TM both ordinary (removed some branches) and bizarre: someone tied a balloon string, neck height, across the trail near the power line crossing. It was tied on both ends, so it was not there by happenstance. (Of course I removed it.)
Someone finally cut up that (Irene vintage??) blowdown just above Res 2 on the trail that runs east of Res 3. Thanks to whomever it was.
