Trail Name: River Highlands State Park
Town: Cromwell
Trail Conditions: Clear bu unkempt
Observations/Information: Took a quick ride at River Highlands Saturday afternoon. It was partly a shake down ride for a new front tire and some minor adjustments to the bike. I spent a lot of time stopped tweaking the bike and clearing the trails, hence a short ride mileage-wise. I also crossed paths with another rider and chatted with him for a while. 1.5 hours and only 3.5 miles covered.
The weather was not favorable- dank, muggy and, for a short while raindrops tinkled from the sky. The trails were dry and clear but unkempt with recent high winds bringing down a lot of sticks and twigs. I cleared what I could. Trails were otherwise in good shape and getting a fair amount of use. The less popular trails, like red and black, appear to be getting more use than they usually do. There's also a new "stunt right down in the Blow Hole. It's very rudimentary- just a series of short logs laid parallel against a fallen tree, creating a kind of corduroy skinny (see photo). Some of the older log-overs are rotting and falling into pieces. Summer is the season of decay.
