Report Type: TA Report:
Trail Name: River Highlands State Park
Town: Cromwell
Trail Conditions: Good, tacky soil, some blowdowns
Observations/Information: I took a late afternoon ride at River Highlands on Friday. There was a breeze blowing on the ridge that made riding more comfortable and kept the bugs at bay. Trails were dry for the most part (no puddle at the top of yellow), with only green in the swamp area being wet. That area is also getting overgrown with thorns, so I'd recommend avoiding it. Soil was tacky for good traction both in climbing and cornering. There were a few blowdowns- one in the Blow Hole, and another on green high on the ridge near the cul de sac. It's a big oak limb and too large to cut. A go-round is forming around it. Otherwise the trails were clear and well ridden. The blowdown on yellow has been cut and they were nice enough to leave an optional log over on the side. (see photo). I crossed paths with one other rider. The gnome activity on the north end of the park appears to have stopped or slowed to a crawl.
I spent some time cleaning up the sidewinder. It's a tough trail to keep clear because it was built, by necessity, in an area with a lot of vines and bent-over trees. It's riding well and would ride even better if the turns were bermed up more.
