Upper Paugussett State Forest

Just down from the Echo Valley Lot

Date: 5/27/2013
Report Type: TA Report:
Trail Name: Upper Paugussett State Forest
Town: Newtown, CT

Trail Conditions: Wet and Muddy

Observations/Information: Upper Paugussett needs to still dry out a bit. Evidence abounds on the Polly Brody is quite wet in four sections, three of which are pictured above.  The first climb after the parking lot will be wet for quite some time.

That one blowdown that juts out into the trail bugs me but it needs a chainsaw to take care of it. Further down I re-did a small up and over because it didn't flow right.

After that is where I discovered some wet issues. After the dog leg the right of the trail is armored, but not the left side and people seem to be favoring the mud than the rocks. DON'T RIDE IN THE MUD - ride the rocks, that is what they are there for!

The Sandy Reroute has major problems, too. It needs nicking and a whole lot of armoring. So much so, I am wondering whether or not I should just re-route the re-route and find a way to either connect to the 3 Bears roller or just tie into the trail further down. Of course that would mean missing my favorite up-and-over (Hippy Stacks).

Guess I am going to try armoring first and if that doesn't work then explore another reroute.

For the rest of the trail it's in great shape.
