Naugatuck State Forest

Date: Nov. 25, 2012
Report Type: TA Report:
Trail Name: Naugatuck State Forest
Town: Beacon Falls, Oxford
Trail Conditions: Dry with minimal blowdowns
Observations/Information: I did a 6 mile hike through the forest. I had planned to start from the "big rock" parking lot by the RR, but the DOT installed a gate where the pavement turns to stone dust, apparently because they consider the road too close to the RR. I did end up walking out that way because I got turned around in this maze of unmarked trails. Cyclists can easily ride in from the Beacon Falls RR station. There are some small branches down, and no signs of any big blowdowns from Hurricane Sandy. There are still some big trees down from Hurricane Irene. The trail surfaces are dry, even in areas that are often wet. Our group moved some of the smaller branches off the trail, but did not have tools for anything larger.
