Trail Name: Naugatuck State Forest
Town: Hamden
Trail Conditions: Mixture of firm dirt and mud
Observations/Information: I walked a circuit from the Downs Road trailhead, heading east on the White Trail to the gas pipeline, then north on the pipeline to the unmarked trails along the brook, and back along the gravel road. I did some light pruning along the White Trail. There were lots of birch and beech branches growing across the trail at eye level. I also cleaned up the White Trail between the road and the brook. There was lots of deadfall along the edges. I also cut some branches that were partially blocking the trail along the gas pipeline. I encountered two guys on bikes who were negotiating around some of the muddy spots, which were in evidence here and there. I spoke with two 12 year old kids on dirt bikes, and explained that dirt bikes are not allowed on state land, and they are not wanted because they tear up the trails. The kids were polite and apologetic and said they had gotten lost coming off some private property in Cheshire. I picked up a few bits of trash along the way, and did a more extensive cleanup at the trailhead.
