Trail Name: Collis P Huntington SP
Town: Redding
Trail Conditions: Good

Observations/Information: Over the last several weeks, I did some prep work for the relocation on the South Pond Loop at Huntington. This was a joint trail maintenance between REI, FCNEMBA, and CTNEMBA. Ryan and Kyeria Tucker and I scouted out projects and came up with a rough idea of where to put the reroute. The reroute was needed due to three highly eroded sections and one muddy area. We spent two hours on that first day. Then I went back two times, once to do the flagging and detail design work, and once to cut dead work and logs that would block the trail. The design was crucial because to keep the old trail blocked the new one would need to meet the needs of the folks who rode it.

Many people take new riders, children, and significant others on this section, so the trail would need to be a fairly easy one. But since riders with more skills enjoyed the trail also, we needed to provided a fair amount of challlenge. To do that we created an easy flowy line with the challenges on the sides of the trail. We also kept access to the one boulder ride from the old trail.

On the day of, 25 people showed up and worked for three hours. We were able to do most of the basic treadway cutting, install a rock spine, clear a roller, create several other technical challenges, and do a substantial reclaimation job on the old trail. The next day, I came back to work on the treadway some more, and also to ride. Over the past week,I visited the park twice more, installing some rolling grade dips, doing more treadway work, and making one more technical feature. Also I wanted to keep an eye on the reclamtion - so far so good, no one has blocked the new trail or opened the old. Whew!
