Upper Paugussett State Forest

Date: 8/21/11
Report Type: TA Report:
Trail Name: Upper Paugussett State Forest
Town: Newtown
Trail Conditions: Very good
Observations/Information: Plan A was to ride Mianus, but it started raining on the way there, so I turned around and headed home. Since it wasn't raining yet in Newtown I headed to Paugussett hoping to salvage a ride. Although thunder rumbled and a dark cloud hung overhead, I was able to get a quick up-and- back in before the rain started. Trail conditions were much improved over the last time I had been there, about two weeks before. The new "cleavage reroute" around the first blowdown is better than the old route and there's also a new optional log-over at the second blowdown. It's a tough feature because it's tall and you need to hit it at an angle. The trail was in great shape, no new horse piles, and only a few sticks down, which I picked up.
